Safety Manager

Blue Mountain Energy is currently seeking an experienced Safety Manager to join our team at the Deserado Mine.
This position reports to the mine manager.
Deserado is an undergound coal mine located near Rangely, Colorado.
*Job Purpose * * Manage the safety and health functions at the Deserado Mine; to include the development, implementation and evaluation of systematic programs which apply continuous improvement concepts of safety and health.
* Evaluate training needs of all employees, hourly and management, to recommend and provide necessary training.
*Duties and Responsibilities * * Implement and maintain a program to control and eliminate safety hazards, unsafe conditions, and unsafe practices in accordance with safety guidelines and assist management in the administration of company policies, practices, and procedures.
* Plan and direct the safety and health activities, including the safety program, accident prevention and industrial hygiene and assure compliance with all Federal, state and company laws, regulations, and policies.
* Review the monthly accident statistics and experience rates and recommend action necessary to improve performance.
* Investigate and maintain safety reports on all accidents and maintain safety and training files on each employee, as required, to meet the reporting requirements of all company, state, and Federal regulations.
* Lead and motivate the work force to improve skills, technical knowledge, and cooperative behavior to improve their performance.
* Maintains contact with other coal companies, governmental agencies, and company personnel necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
* Develop and implement procedures for testing and evaluating personnel protective equipment, devices, and instruments for the safe handling of hazardous chemicals, fluids, and explosives.
* Supervise and direct the task and safety training of employees and ensure all work is performed in accordance with established standards and safety practices.
* Develop and implement pro-active approaches to improve performance in safety, health, and efficiency.
* Develop and implement methods to structure and increase employee involvement in safety, health, and efficiency.
* Coordinate an overall ergonomic program.
* Coordinates and directs the training, preparation, readiness, and skill level of the mine rescue teams.
* Interfaces with UMWA Safety Committee.
* Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
*Experience and Qualifications * * Five to seven years’ experience in a health or safety related role, preferably in coal mining and dealing with MSHA.

S.
degree in a safety/health related field, or equivalent.
Mine foreman certification, dust sample certification, and previous supervisory experience.
* Complete knowledge of relevant government laws and regulations impacting the functional responsibilities of the occupation.
* Willingness to work as a team player, self-manage and show initiative.
* Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, including preparing and presenting presentations to operation’s personnel and management.
* Elevated computer software skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
Communicate, interact, and coordinate with mine departments to ensure their cooperation and support of the mine’s safety programs, policies, procedures, and safety initiatives.
