Under the direction of the Water Field Supervisor, is responsible for the operation of department-related equipment and oversees work of crew in the installation, maintenance and repairs of water lines, pressure reducing valves, PI system and wells in the city water system.
Is also responsible for the Cross-Connection Control Program for the city.
- Responsible for the day-to-day operations of a crew in repairing and maintaining water mains and service lines, water meters, maintaining and repairing main line pressure reducing valves, maintenance of all wells and well houses.
- Responsible for all aspects of operation, maintenance and repair of pressurized and Flood Irrigation Systems.
- Monitors the performance of crew members on his crew.
- Assures that crew members follow necessary safety procedures.
- Responsible for monitoring the performance of all equipment, gauges and pressure reducing valves.
Records statistical data concerning pumping operation maintains and operates repairs and replaces equipment as necessary.
- Operates, maintains and repairs malfunctions at the pumping and pressure reducing valve stations.
- Responsible for record keeping of work performed, materials used and hours expended.
- Carries out valve exercising program for the city.
- Carries out Cross-Connection Control Program, inspections, permitting, and all record keeping and filing pertinent to the program.
- Operates equipment in digging and filling trances for laying and repair of water lines, hydrants, City fountains, sprinkling systems and plumbing.
- Serves on an on-call status, as needed.
- Determines quantities, what types of materials, tools, equipment and labor needed to complete assigned projects.
- Responsible for monthly samplings and readings at points of collection and distribution into the system.
- Responsible for recording data for department files and reporting to state, as required.
- Works as a water quality technician.
- Maintains and repairs chlorinators.
- Carries out work order assignments, consisting of shut-offs, rereads, and recording of vital information concerning meter locations, size, etc.
- Responsible for seasonal meter reading, training of meter readers, giving assignments to reading districts, job performance and quality control.
- All other duties as assigned.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Must have (4) years of combined work experience in the operation and maintenance of Drinking and/or Secondary Water Distribution systems, Or equivalent related underground utility installation.
Additional Desired Qualifications: Management skills including planning and organizing, problem analysis and decision making, time management, leadership, and interpersonal sensitivity.
Training and experience in trench excavation and shoring work practices and procedures.
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.
Certification Requirements: Utah Grade III or IV Unrestricted Certified Water Distribution Operator.
Utah Cross Connection Control Technician certificate within six (6) months of hire date.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire date.
Traffic Control Supervisor Certificate within twelve (12) months of hire date.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Must be able to perform all the necessary repair and installation work on water pipelines.
Lead a skilled work crew.
Read and understand written and oral instructions.
Be available for on-call status.
Operate a backhoe and similar equipment.
Perform routine maintenance of pumps and motors.
Work outdoors in all types of weather.
Assist in preparing a year-to-year operations budget.
Work well with the public while carrying out job functions.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, and be able to climb on ladders and into meter holes and boxes.
Must have enough physical strength and agility to perform required work.
Must be able to work in all weather conditions and in and around heavy traffic.
